Causes, Symptoms and Treatment For Canine Kidney Disease

Canine kidney disease is one of the most distressing sicknesses our animals can ever experience. The kidneys of a healthy dog will flush out the toxins in the bloodstream. Subsequently, dogs with kidney diseases are incapable of regulating this function effectively. You can imagine the damaging results it will then cause to the other organs in his body. When this is not treated immediately and properly, kidney or renal disease can be fatal for your pet.

The first sign that your dog might have kidney disease is frequent urination, diarrhea, vomiting and consequently (because of dehydration), increased thirstiness. This is due to the inability of the kidneys to concentrate toxins in a small amount of urine, thus the dog’s body compensates by drinking more and urinating more. He will also likely suffer from lethargy, lack of appetite and enlarged kidneys that are painful when touched.

When the dog is not treated immediately, you can expect the symptoms to grow progressively worse. This is because the uremic wastes that have not been discharged properly will affect his other internal systems as well. Your dog might experience excessive bruising, seizures, breathing difficulties (because of fluid build-up in the lungs), systemic hypertension, and even blindness due to retinal detachment caused by high blood pressure.

You may be feeling a little overwhelmed with the symptoms and effects of kidney disease but that is the reality of it. You can avoid it by giving your dog a healthy diet early on to prevent chronic kidney failure. Also, keep him away from harsh medications and food ingredients that are bad for dogs. This will trigger acute kidney failure—or rapid deterioration of the kidney functions. If you see your dog ingest a harmful chemical, let him vomit it out and give him a lot of water immediately to flush it out of his system. Bring him to the vet for a check-up as soon as possible.

Conventionally, kidney diseases are managed by prescribing some sort of medication, putting your dog on a fluid therapy, and giving him a low sodium diet. This may help for a while, but it is not completely effective to do any significant change in the dog’s kidney health.

Holistic therapies are proving to be more valuable in treating disease in both humans and animals. Your pet can benefit from natural herbs and tonics that specifically target the problematic functions of the damaged organs. Moreover, because holistic remedies generally consist of organic and natural elements, it will be safer for the animal. Think about it, the less toxins and chemicals—the better for your dog’s kidneys.

Look for a holistic vet and learn more about the possible treatments you can give to your pet suffering from canine kidney disease. Include Omega 3 fatty acids, Vitamins A, B and E to his diet. This is known to improve canine health and improve his immune system. Engage him in light exercise daily to improve his circulation and give him fresh water daily to promote regular cleansing of his internal system.
