If you have a dog, you already have one of the best gifts life has to offer—a loyal companion and a fun and life-long friend. Really, where would the world be without these great creatures that love us unconditionally. Your love for your pet is the reason why you are reading this right now. Dog health is a very important issue for you right now.

Well, you are in the right place. Knowing about common dog health problems will help you avoid them so your pet can enjoy the best quality of life. Keep in mind that there are a lot of other canine diseases that may beset particular breeds. What we are talking about here are the most common ones that are treatable and more often than not, preventable.

1.     Parasites. This is perhaps the most prevalent problem many pet owners and their dogs deal with today. Tiny harmful organisms are not just pests that some misinformed individuals might be thinking—they can cause serious damage to your dog’s health. Lice and ticks that latch on to a wound or scab can foster infection. Internal parasites like heartworms, tapeworms, hookworms, roundworms, etc. will result in untold damage to your dog’s internal organs.

When you know that your dog is suffering from parasites, take the necessary steps to treat it right away. Use anti-bacterial and antiseptic products on him to cure any infestation problem; and ask the vet on what medication you can administer to your pet for problems with internal parasites. As much as possible, let your dog take the mildest medication— natural and herbal tonics are recommended.

2.     Allergies. You will know if your dog is suffering from allergies if he vomits, keeps scratching all the time, seems flushed or redder than usual, and is constantly chewing his paws. His allergies can be caused by something he ate or perhaps a substance (detergent, dust, pollen) that his system does not agree with. Isolate the problem and eliminate it from your dog’s lifestyle completely. This is usually easily solved but when no treatment is forthcoming, more serious consequences have been known to happen.

3.     Arthritis. This is also one of the most common dog health problems. It usually develops over time with the natural wear and tear of the dog’s ligaments. Sometimes, when a young dog sustained an injury in his legs which is not treated correctly, he will also acquire arthritis. If your dog is limping, does not like to move and cries when touched, go to the vet right away.

The best way to keep your dog healthy is by giving him a good diet rich with essential vitamins and nutrients. Make it a point to exercise him (walks, light jogging, swimming) daily and bring him to the vet for regular check-ups. The sooner you find out the health problems your dog is likely to contract, the better the chances of complete recovery. Be faithful with the little things and reap the rewards of the best dog health in the years to come!
